Our Failures

These are our failures from our project that we have learned from this quarter.

Silicone Box

The silicone material we tested out worked to grow the mycelium bricks in, but it is not a very appropriate material for the Source Farm to work with due to its price and accessibility.

ADJUSTMENTS: Use plastic sheets folded and secured into boxes with duct tape

Maggots and Mold, OH MY

The first molds that we inoculated during week 2 got contaminated, which ultimately weakens the mycelium bricks because other bacteria and contaminants can eat away the nutrients necessary for the mycelium.

ADJUSTMENTS: The materials and environment need to be sterilized with alcohol consistently and a protective covering needs to be utilized

Mushroom Growth

When left to grow too long, mushrooms grow (drawing nutrients away from the mycelium throughout the brick). Bricks are dried to halt their growth, but any moisture in the brick or environment causes growth to resume.

ADJUSTMENTS: Monitor bricks to see when the mycelium has fully grown. Fully dry bricks using a dehydrator or convention oven. Apply a seal around the bricks to protect it from moisture in the environment.
